Unfortunately, I didn't hear about the "Cupcake Craze" segment on Nightline last night, November 19, 2009, until I absentmindedly turned on my television. Cupcakes were the topic of the "Sign of the Times" segment.

Profiled were Georgetown Cupcakes and the Ace of Cakes. Georgetown Cupcakes sells an average of 5000 cupcakes a day! One of the owners revealed that  sales reached an all time one-day record of 6000 last week. That's a whole lot of buttercream.

The Ace of Cakes was an entertaining interview. He was for a New York minute the Guinness World Record Champion for baking the world's largest cupcake. He lost the title because of a technicality. His mammoth cupcake was baked in two parts, which disqualified him from competition after the fact.
He was secfretly wishing for the "Danish" pastries to become the new pastry zeitgeist. He ended the interview by literally driving a trio of Magnolia Bakery cupcakes into the cameraman's view with perfect aim.

Is the cupcake bubble about to burst?  Nah.  Everyone likes comfort food and cupcakes are the best kind of comfort.
