The Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association will be having its 4th annual Wine & Crab Taste-Off on Sunday, January 21st from 2 pm – 5 pm.
Five of the finest restaurants in Aptos and Soquel will be going head to head in hopes of being named “Crab Cook 2007”. The establishments are partnering with two to six wineries each, 17 in all. Each chef will be preparing two crab selections, one of which will incorporate a local wine. The idea is to visit at least two establishments, taste the crab courses and suggested wines and vote. The restaurants participating are:
Bittersweet Bistro, Aptos
Cafe Rio, Aptos
Ma Maison, Aptos
Michael's on Main, Soquel
Theo's, Soquel
Frankly, I was a little skeptical about this event until I asked the boys from Valhalla, who live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, what they thought. They are very impressed with Theo’s and Michael’s on Main so the idea of visiting those two places for $45 plus wine sounded like a great deal and a lot of fun.
For reservations or more information, including links to the restaurants and wineries, visit www.scmwa.com/WineandCrabTasteOff.htm or contact the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association at 831-685-VINE (8463) or info@scmwa.com. Cost: $45 per person for two restaurants ($15 each additional restaurant) plus the cost of wine. There will be no tickets available at the door so advanced purchase is required.
Food Notebook post by Carter Lusher. Tip o’ the hat to Dave and Robby for the low down on the restaurants and that it might be worthwhile to check this event out.
