Restaurant hopping is one of my favorite ways to dine out, especially when I can't quite make up my mind on a particular restaurant for a full meal. For me, it's often a spur of the moment decision. Usually it works, but once I should have thought before indulging.
A couple of Saturdays ago, I decided to go hopping in downtown San Mateo. It was raining, but I didn’t let that dampen my enthusiasm. The first establishment I dropped by was 231 Ellsworth. Alas, it was closed for a private holiday party. No problemo. Then I ambled over to Kingfish. The downstairs bar was packed, in part because about one-third of the restaurant, including the upstairs bar, was closed for a private holiday party. There was a disturbing pattern emerging. I then scuttled over to Sushi Sam’s, because I had heard great things about it and the line was out the door and folks were waiting on the sidewalk… in the rain. Argh. So the moral of the story is to take weather conditions and season into account before blithely going off on a restaurant hopping adventure.
